When a freight train travelling along the line North of Stafford was involved in a collision with a stationery freight train, Norton Bridge became a hive of activity in a matter of hours.
Fortunately, there were no serious injuries, but the impact had caused the de-railment of the engine and, in two other areas, carriages of the freight train. This resulted in the need to install around 1km of roadway for the heavy cranes required to recover the stricken carriages and so enable the removal of the remaining rolling stock and the necessary repairs to damaged track sections.
The roadway installation began within a few hours of the accident site being assessed and the recovery schedule being agreed by the railway operator, Network Rail, and heavy lifting specialists, Ainscough Crane Hire. From that point on, work didn't stop until the roadway was installed.
In all, more than 900 panels were used to create the access roadway to the crane standing locations.
A milk vehicle attending a Cheshire farm fell foul of a narrow road with a ditch to one side. When the roadway edge began to crumble, the weight of the lorry became too much and it slipped into the ditch, turning upside down in the process.
Whilst there was an adjacent field from which a crane could recover the lorry, there was a significant difference in levels between the road and the field.
A temporary access road was installed from the farm, past the incident site, coming back down the field and creating a hard standing for the crane to facilitate the successful recovery of the stricken vehicle.
